Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a subcontractor and an employee driver?
Subcontractors are self-employed, drive their own van, manage their own taxes (UTR/NI), and pick jobs flexibly. Employee drivers are on PAYE, drive a VanGo van, and follow a fixed schedule. Both options offer regular work — choose what fits your situation.
Do I need my own van to apply?
Only for the subcontractor route. If you have your own Luton or 3.5T van and the right insurance, you can join as a self-employed subcontractor. If you don't have a van, apply as a VanGo employee driver — we provide the vehicle.
What documents do I need?
All applicants need a valid UK driving licence (held for at least 2 years), the right to work in the UK, and a clean DBS check. Subcontractors also need UTR, NI number, share code, vehicle registration, and goods-in-transit insurance. We will verify all documents during onboarding.
How quickly can I start?
Once we receive your application, we aim to review it within a few working days. Subcontractor onboarding (document checks, vehicle verification) typically takes 1 to 2 weeks. Employee onboarding follows our standard hiring process.
Is the work full-time or flexible?
Subcontractors work flexibly — pick the jobs that suit your schedule. Employee drivers follow a regular weekly schedule with set hours. We'll discuss specific arrangements during the application process.
